This is the story of Storm-Boy and his father, Hide-Away Tom, who live in the strange wilderness area of South Australia known as the Coorong.
Storm-Boy and Hide-Away Tom live in a driftwood shack in the sandhills between the roaring surf of the Southern Ocean and the Coorong: the lonely, narrow stretch of water that runs parallel to a long reach of the South Australian coast.
Storm-Boy saves the life of a pelican which he finds among the teeming birdlife of the Coorong, and names him Mr Percival. They explore the wave-beaten shore and the windswept sandhills, each finding in the other all the companionship he needs. Mr Percival learns to help Hide-Away Tom with his fishing, and his part in the rescue of a shipwrecked crew leads to great changes in Storm-Boy's life.
This is a magical book, loved by people of all ages and with a definitive place in Australian literature.
